The moon, the sun and the stars were important symbolic elements for Van Gogh who equated their radiating light to religious precepts surrounding the resurrection, redemption and salvation. In this painting the moon in brilliant yellow rises from behind the smoky blue Alpilles mountains, and radiates a light that he has evoked through multiple short strokes of white paint. His use of these short, regular, white strokes was fairly unusual for him, but gives the effect of the dappled moonlight playing across the landscape. There is great rhythm in this painting that is created through these very precise brushstrokes - every stroke of paint here has a function and builds towards the greater surface pattern across the canvas. His forms are very rounded from the stacks of wheat to the mountains, and this sense of 'roundness' and curvature was something that was characteristic of many of his later works.

Working homeowners value great landscapes but seldom have sufficient free time to enjoy everything their outdoor living space has to offer. There is a solution to this dilemma and that is tailoring your landscape design to meet your busy schedule. If the light is just right you will discover that red indeed appears to be gray and yellows and other light hues appear white. The nighttime landscape is an opportunity for playing with the light that suits the more relaxed activities for that time of day. You can turn up the light to have truer hues, but most people will enjoy a balance of grays and whites with only small splashes of color in strategic places. Photographers know that colors change throughout the day due to factors such as humidity and other environmental factors.

Claude Monet. Claude Monet's pastels, which were long overshadowed by his paintings, reflect his Impressionist approach as regards subject and design. The artist valued greatly the qualities of the pastel technique, which combines drawing and painting - not so much as a way of preparing the composition of his plein-air painting, but rather in terms of stylistic sketches in order to study the corresponding forms of expression.Pastels, and the opportunities they offered for coloured design, were very popular in France, especially in the late nineteenth century - as they had previously been during the late eighteenth century. Their consistency and appearance differ essentially from other drawing materials and techniques. The dry pastel crayons are made by compressing a 'paste' of coloured pigments and water-soluble binding agents. The colours, available in a wide variety of shades, get their typical gentle character through the addition of white chalk dust.
